redolence
The faint redolence of the past dictates our senses still. Millions of years of olfactory evolution constrained by social prejudice to rigid binaries intended for commercial exploitation.
My thesis aims to unite these divided worlds by distilling the imposed binaries of fragrance narrative, and their fashioned gender counterparts, to their raw forms and redefine them.
My garments are made out of organic fibers which are naturally porus and allow for fragrance molecules to embed, allowing each look's individually designed perfume to be a part of the designed experience.
Inspired by the this period that glorified division, and framed through scent associations of that time, my garments integrate the top, middle, and base notes of Edwardian daily dress to re-contextualize and expand our modern relationship with fragrance.
Kay Trow is a New York based designer who uses the medium of fashion design to tell stories about the natural world while moving away from modern understandings of style by re-imagining the history of our clothing.
I take design inspiration from the Edwardian era’s tailoring, textiles, social commentary, and craftsmanship. I am of the opinion that the beauty of design is in the details and the conscious ways we choose to layer the top, middle, and base notes of garments to create a sense of identity similar to the artistry of perfume making. I thus combines olfactory and molecular research to pair fragrance notes with textiles and design-looks for each of my collections. It is time that we discover the ways we can combine fragrance and fashion, redefine the past and tell new and modern tales involving unexpected senses.
I have a background in pattern-making, working free-lance and professionally while securing my BFA degree in Fashion Design at Parsons School of design. I have also interned in RTW Development & Production for Proenza Schouler and worked as a pattern & sample maker for threeASFOUR.
Outside of school, I co-founded the New York based clothing project @patientzero.ny. Patient Zero focuses on crafting garments that feel like an ode to fashion’s past. Rooted in vintage silhouettes and produced in small batches, our pieces are designed to honor the past while treading gently into the future of slow-fashion. We use antique hardware sourced from auctions and use dead-stock fabrics to use textiles already in circulation rather than adding more waste to the environmentally damaging industry.
